Finding the Perfect Christmas Tree in the Villages of Mt Hood

Finding the Perfect Christmas Tree in the Villages of Mt Hood
Posted by Mt Hood Vacation Rentals

Looking for the perfect Christmas Tree?  There are dozens of locations to find your Christmas Tree this year in East Clackamas County which is one of the top Christmas Tree growing areas in the country.  As you drive along Highway 26 or any of the scenic backroads you will discover Christmas Tree lots just around every bend and over every hill.  We have selected a few that are easy to access and right along the way to your Holiday Destination in a Mt Hood Vacation Rental.

Sandy Fire Department:

Driving east on Highway 26 from Sandy, Oregon to Welches, Oregon, a good Christmas Tree lot for picking up a tree is at the Sandy Fire Department on the corner of Bruns and Pioneer.  The Fire Department is about 1/2 way through town after you are driving on the one-way.  All sales benefit the Teen Explorer unit. Open daily, 3 – 7 PM. Trees are pre-cut and cost $20-25. 503-668-8093

Porter’s Nursery, 3.9 miles:

If you would like to get a live tree that can be planted in your yard after the Holidays, continue east on Highway 26 for 3.9  miles.  You will find Porter’s Nursery on the north side of the road.  Porter’s is a family run working nursery that specializes in evergreen trees.  The Porter family lives on site with gorgeous views of Mt Hood.  They sell Austrian Pines, Cypress, Blue Spruce as well as several other species.  Trees are 4 feet tall and above and sell for $25-45. Hours: Open most days, you will know if the gate is open. 503-668-8441.

Harrison’s Christmas Tree Farm, 5.4 miles:

Continue 1.5 miles past Porters to visit the Harrison Family who have been operating their Christmas Tree Farm for over 30 years.  Located on the north side of the road, his multi-generational enterprise specializes in Noble Firs.  They will cut them for you or you can cut your own.  The Harrisons also sell wreaths and other holiday decorations and items. Open daily 9 AM – dusk through December 23. 503-668-9769.

Alder Creek Farms, 8.4 miles:

Alder Creek Farms is located 3 miles further east on the north side of the highway and is another family-operated farm with a large Christmas Tree Farm.  They also harvest firewood and board horses.  Alder Creek Farms offers a number of exciting events along with selling Christmas Trees. Visitors will be entered in a raffle for every tree that is purchased.  Prizes include 7 nights for two in Orlando, Florida, 2 mountain bikes, several $50 gift cards and much more.  Santa Claus will draw the winning tickets on December 23. Douglas, Noble and Grand firs are available as U-cut, We-cut or Pre-cut and will be shaken and baled for you. Open daily, 10 AM – dusk through December 23. 503-781-7707

Welches Mountain Building Supply, 15.8 miles:

If you want to wait until you get to the Villages of Mt Hood to purchase your tree, the Welches Mountain Building Supply has a beautiful selection of Grand, Douglas and Noble Firs between 4 feet and 8 feet tall.  Prices range from about $15-40.  They will have trees available through December 24.  Located 7.4 miles of Alder Creek Farms in Welches at the corner of Arrah Wanna Blvd and Highway 26 on the south side of the road. Open Monday – Saturday, 8 AM – 6 PM, Sunday, 9 AM – 5 PM, Christmas Eve, 8 AM – 3 PM. 503-622-3000.

Zigzag Ranger Station, 17.3 miles:

If you would like to cut your own tree in the Mt Hood National Forest, head to the Zigzag Ranger Station for a permit and map of areas where you are allowed to cut trees.  The Ranger Station is on the south side of Highway 26, 1 mile east of Welches Road.  You can cut any tree that is growing in the forest, so your Christmas Tree might be a hemlock, Doug fir, noble fir or cedar this year.  You are allowed to take trees up to 12 feet tall.  Open Monday – Saturday, 7:45 AM – 4:30 PM; Sunday, December 6, 13, 20, 8 AM – 2 PM.  Permits cost $5 (cash or check only and no large bills, please).  You will need to take your own limbing saw.  Also remember that it can be cold and snowy or rainy in the woods, so wear warm clothes. Also be prepared for winter driving conditions; you will likely not be able to drive above 2500 feet due to snow on the roads. 503-622-3191.

A couple of things to remember when selecting your Christmas Tree:

  • Measure the space for both height and width where you plan on putting up your tree.  It is easy to select too large of tree when you are outside among all of the trees and the vast open sky.
  • If you select a pre-cut tree, make sure it is fresh and green and not starting to dry out.
  • Look at all sides of the tree; if one side is flat or more sparse it might be ok if that side is going to be against a wall anyway.
  • Take your tree home and get it into water as soon as possible.
For more information and locations to find your Christmas Tree, check out this Gresham Outlook Article.
Happy Holidays and have fun selecting your Christmas Tree in the Villages of Mt Hood.

Give the Gift of Time Well Spent This Holiday Season

Give the Gift of Time Well Spent This Holiday Season
Posted by Mt Hood Vacation Rentals | Tuesday, November 30, 2021

Holiday markets are abound and the end caps at stores are shimmering with paper and ribbons, but a new theme is also appearing in our holiday culture… and this one doesn’t come in a package. Articles about giving the Gift of Time this holiday season are popping up on Facebook and we couldn’t agree more. It’s time to take a small step back from our consumer culture and focus on the true spirit of the holidays – time well spent with family and friends.

Instead of wrapping up plastic toys that will be broken and tech that will only pull us further away from our family and friends, let’s wrap up an experience that we can share together. There may be less to unwrap but the memories you create will serve you for years to come. Here are some solid reasons to ditch the paper and plastic and head to Mt Hood, Oregon for a holiday vacation this year.

What Are We Actually Spending All This Money On?

Did you know that the average consumer expects to spend around $1,000 during the holiday season this year? That’s enough to cover lodging for 3-7 nights in the Villages of Mt Hood in Oregon! What’s more? Best-selling psychological author Oliver James said in an interview with the Telegraph that kids don’t even want or value an “extraordinary proportion” of the gifts they are given. Recent research also shows that fewer toys encourage more creative & imaginative play.

So why do we continue to buy, buy, buy every holiday season? We want our families to know we’re thinking about them and care about them. Instead of spending $1,000 on gifts and trying to fill up the holiday season with entertaining things for the family to do, why not stay in a Mt Hood cabin where entertainment will be right outside your door? Kids will eventually outgrow their holiday presents, but memories from a family vacation will stick with them forever.

Creating Opportunities to Play Together

Psychological author Oliver James goes on to explain that what children really crave is prolonged play experiences with their families… and what adult doesn’t love a good escape from reality? While adults and children both seek different experiences out of vacations there is one common interest – time well spent with each other. It seems like when we’re not wrapping presents we’re wrapped up in work or in our phone. It’s the little moments when we stop wrapping and stop scrolling that matter.

It’s tricking dad to come outside and starting a snowball fight, or getting enough of mom’s time for that second bedtime story. It’s sneaking a cookie before dinner and staying up late playing board games next to the wood burning fireplace. It’s ordering in pizza because you spent longer than expected at the ski hill, or starting cocktail hour just a wee bit early because you spent more time falling than skiing. Whatever your family dynamics, quality time with your loved ones is a truly special gift.

Will You Join Us?

Save yourself some shopping and stressing this year. Put the ribbons and paper down and let your family and friends know you’re opting for a different type of experience this year. Tell them you want to give them a gift that can never be erased… memories! Read more about giving the gift of travel or browse our Mt Hood vacation cabins and plan your holiday experience today.

There are available dates for this year’s holiday season. Do you have your holiday plans firmed up for this year? Reservations are now available for 2022. Booking early will give you lots of choices in vacation homes.

A Gift Certificate for a visit to a Mt Hood Vacation Rental is the ideal holiday gift, letting your loved ones choose their favorite vacation home and ideal dates for Creating Memories That Matter in their lives. Mt Hood Vacation Rentals’ Gift Certificates can be for any dollar amount and can specify your favorite vacation rental or you can let your giftee choose the perfect cabin, chalet or lodge for their vacation. We will prepare a full-color gift certificate that will be emailed to you in PDF format, so you can print it for a card insert or in a gift wrapped box. Call us at 888-424-9168 to get started.

Celebrating the Holidays Apart but Together

Celebrating the Holidays Apart but Together
Posted by Tiffany Quillan | Thursday, November 5, 2020

Statewide lockdowns led many of us to miss spring weddings, Easter gatherings and birthday celebrations with our loved ones earlier this year. It was a bummer, but it also made us feel hopeful that come winter this virus would be just a memory. Fast forward many months and travel has opened back up, but COVID has not gone away.

The holiday season is nearly here and many of us are left wondering how we can make this season feel special, even though we may not be able to gather with the whole family as we usually do. I’ve put a lot of thought into this question myself and have come up with some ways to make this winter holiday season special – even if it’s just my husband and I. If you’ve got ideas to add, please share the love on any social media channel with #HolidaysApartButTogether.

Celebrating Holidays Without Family

I guess “celebrating holidays without family” is a bit misleading, because distance doesn’t mean separate. Celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, Hanukkah, the New Year (aren’t we all looking for 2020 to be over?) and everything in-between without family in the same room is certainly different – but we can still make it special.

Plan Your Holiday Meals Together

Food is the glue that holds holiday celebrations together. It doesn’t matter what you agree (or disagree) on at the dinner table when your favorite family recipe is being passed to you. So maybe mom can’t make your favorite dish for you this year – instead you both can make it and enjoy it together (but apart).

Planning to cook the exact same meal miles apart can be a special experience. You’ll get to share that secret ingredient you’ve been putting in your prized dish with your loved ones, and you’ll gain some appreciation for not having to cook the items your siblings handle each year. So give it a go – plan your holiday meals together, video chat throughout it and enjoy a good laugh at whoever’s pumpkin pie falls flat. Memories are made in the small moments, and cooking is one of them. Post your tasty meal pics with #HolidaysApartButTogether and encourage others to join in on the fun.

Make it Special for the Kiddos

How does that country song go? “Let them be little, cause they’re only that way for a while…“. And oh how true that is. This can be an especially anxious time for parents who want to ensure their kids have all those magic holiday memories they grew up having. So for the parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents out there – how can we make this memorable for the kiddos when the whole family isn’t gathered around them like they normally are? I don’t think we’ll find the answer in consumer culture. Toys will be tossed, clothes will be outgrown and fads will wear out. But what about an experience designed just for them that the whole family pitches in to create?

Do you remember when Make-A-Wish created a special Bat Kid experience for a very adorable young batman fan? Why not create a themed scavenger hunt or treasure hunt based on your kid’s favorite movie character? Parents can hide themed objects around the house and family members can video chat in with clues – costumes optional but highly recommended. Your grandson isn’t going to remember that you bought him another Lego set for the holidays that one year, but he will remember that you dressed up like a Ninja Turtle and led him on a virtual hunt to find his very own prize!

Throw a Virtual Family History Trivia Night

Video chatting is a great way to catch up – but it can feel difficult when you have a huge group of people online all trying to talk at once. Organizing a trivia game is a great way to ensure conversation flows smoothly and everyone gets a turn to talk. Cater the trivia questions to inside family jokes, memories from past holidays and important family history. You’ll have a blast reminiscing about the turkey that Aunt Jane burnt to a crisp, the unmentionable present that landed in the wrong hands and the special memories you share of great grandparents. Adults can pickup some eggnog and take a sip when they fumble on a question. Trivia Maker is a great option for an easy online trivia maker that you can share during a video call.

Escape to a Romantic Retreat

One of the best parts about seeing family on the holidays is traveling, especially as a couple or a family with children. I can recall so many road trips to grandma’s house – some of my most precious and priceless memories being the hilarity that ensues after spending hours in the car. There’s something about a change of scenery that helps you store memories in a special part of your heart. That magic is alive and well this year – and all you need to do is plan an escape to a romantic retreat for the holidays. Picture a snowy cabin in the woods at Mt Hood – complete with a cozy fireplace and gorgeous views. Holidays here will conjure up memories of hot cocoa, family game nights and snowball fights for years to come.

Find a Romantic Retreat

Enjoy Each Other’s Travels Virtually

Your choice to escape to a vacation cabin won’t prevent you from making memories with your brothers, sisters, parents or extended family either. Create all of those virtual activities you just read about and enjoy your mountain escape. Your family might also love a tour of your Mt Hood cabin. Just earlier this year I was disappointed that my aunts and uncles couldn’t attend my wedding-turned-elopement at a gorgeous vacation home… so my mom gave them all the virtual tour instead. Being able to see what your family is doing and experiencing through your own eyes in real time is a great way to keep the conversation going – and it feels more authentic then the edited version of ourselves that we so often post on social media.

Plan Your Mt Hood Getaway

We hope your holiday season is filled with magical moments and cheer no matter the location and with whomever you celebrate. We’ve got just what you’re looking for if a cozy cabin at Mt Hood sounds like it might make your holiday brighter. Browse our rentals today and start planning your holiday apart but together.

Cozy & Quick Comfort Food Dishes for Fall
Posted by Mt Hood Vacation Rentals | Thursday, August 29, 2019

Easy Versions of Favorite Fall Comfort Foods

One of the best reasons to stay in a vacation rental when you visit Mt Hood is for the fully-equipped kitchens. You and your friends and family can easily prepare a group meal in the kitchen, then you can gather around the dining table for conversation and a delicious feast.

During the fall months, with the cooler and wetter weather, it is the time of year when we start to cook inside more often, too. We have 3 of our employees’ favorite fall comfort food recipes below. These dishes are all versions of more complex dishes in easy to make versions that will be sure to please a crowd, but if you want leftovers, make an extra pan.

Cari’s Pan Burrito
This is Cari’s quick version of burritos. You can make a large batch and feed a crowd without having to do all of the work of making individual burritos. You can substitute shredded chicken or pork in this recipe, too.

1 lb ground beef
1 small onion, diced
1 package of burrito seasoning
1 12 oz can of refried beans
1 small can of tomato paste
1.5 cups of water
4 cups of grated cheese
1 cup of salsa
4 large flour tortillas
Sour cream
Fresh chives, diced

Brown beef in skillet with diced onions then season beef and onions with salt and pepper.  Drain off fat.  Add packet of burrito seasoning, water, tomato paste and refried beans to the same skillet and mix well.  Let simmer for 10 minutes.

In a greased 9 inch pie pan, place ¼ of beef/bean mixture then a layer of cheese topped with a tortilla, repeat this process until you have 4 tortilla layers.  On the top of the final tortilla spread 1 cup of your favorite salsa and more grated cheese.
Bake at 350° for 30-45 minutes until pie is thoroughly heated.  Serve with sour cream & chives.

Betsy’s “Fake” Lasagna
This recipe includes most of the ingredients you will find in lasagna, but it is a lot less work to make as a casserole. Make 2 batches for a large crowd.

3 cups orecchiette, farfalle or fusilli pasta cooked according to package directions.
2 jars marinara sauce
1 tbsp. olive oil
½ onion, diced
1 bell pepper, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 lb chicken Italian sausage (mild or hot)
1 pint ricotta cheese
3 cups grated mozzarella cheese
1 cup grated parmesan cheese

Saute onion and bell pepper for about 5 minutes. Add the sausage and cook until browned. Add the minced garlic and cook for a couple of minutes (do not let the garlic turn brown). Add the marinara sauce and cook for 5 more minutes to meld the flavors.

Pour a layer of sauce in the bottom of a 13” x9” pan or a 3 quart casserole dish. Add 1/3 of the cooked pasta. Spread ½ cup of the mozzarella cheese over the pasta, then a layer of sauce so that it seeps down into the pasta. Add spoonfulls of ricotta cheese and another ½ cup of mozzarella cheese. Continue with 2 more layers, topping the casserole with the grated parmesan cheese.

Bake covered at 350° for 30 minutes. Bake uncovered for another 15 minutes. Take out of the oven and let the casserole rest for about 10 minutes before serving.

Rachael’s Pumpkin Dump Cake
When Rachael makes this cake for work, she has to make two, so her husband has one to eat at home. The first time Rachael brought this to the office, the team devoured the entire cake by mid-morning.

Cake
1 package yellow cake mix
1 egg
8 tbsp butter, melted

Filling
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 (15-ounce) can pumpkin
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
8 tbsp butter, melted
1 (16-ounce) box powdered sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg

Preheat oven to 350°. Combine the cake mix, egg and 8 ounces melted butter and mix well with an electric mixer. Pat the mixture into the bottom of a lightly greased 13×9 inch baking pan. To make the filling: In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and the pumpkin until smooth. Add the eggs, vanilla and 8 ounces melted butter and beat together. Next, add the powdered sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg and mix well. Spread the pumpkin mixture over the cake batter and bake for 40-50 minutes. Make sure not to overbake as the center should be a little gooey.
